![]() The band went on to rule the ‘90s, defining “alternative” on their own terms: they flexed hard on heavy hitters “Vasoline” and “Interstate Love Song”, stripped down with devastating power ballads like “Big Empty”, glammed up on “Big Bang Baby” and tossed in elements of psychedelic rock, shoegaze, jazz and metal in between. Otherwise, STP oozed sex and swagger-far more than any of their contemporaries-and their 1992 debut album, Core, came loaded with blistering guitars (“Sex Type Thing”), decade-defining riffs (“Plush”) and Weiland’s distinctive wail, which teetered between menacing and melancholic (“Creep”). Together, they were “alternative rock”-if only in their angst. Brothers Dean (guitar) and Robert DeLeo (bass) slipped in hints of ragtime and rhythm and blues, while drummer Eric Kretz kicked up the speed with John Bonham-influenced footwork. ![]() Led by the mercurial, magnetic Scott Weiland, the San Diego quartet formed in 1989 and began crafting a sound-and fashion sense-inspired by rock idols The Doors, David Bowie and Aerosmith. That song is included in my “gym playlist”.While grunge’s vanguard was attempting to topple the rock-god myth in the early ‘90s, Stone Temple Pilots came along to assume the mantle. Nevertheless, I’m glad to hear my favorite song, “Hickory Dichotomy”, from their current album. It would have been awesome if they had an acoustic set as well. Some of these songs are: Sour Girl, Creep, Lady Picture Show and Pretty Penny. There are some songs that I would have wanted to hear live though. They did a cover of Led Zeppelin’s Dancing Days (they do this most of the time). They played some old hits and some new songs. Stone Temple Pilots opened with Crackerman which made the crowd stand up and sing with STP. I like Sino Sikat but their music is very different from that of Stone Temple Pilots. We where seated at Upper Box B then.Īnyway, I was disappointed with the choice of Sino Sikat as the front act of Stone Temple Pilots. ![]() The last time we watched a concert in Araneta Coliseum was the Gin Blossoms concert. We got the Upper Box A tickets via TicketNet. We ended up choosing Stone Temple Pilots because we like them more and of course, we both love the concert venue (Araneta Coliseum). We’re supposed to watch it but the concert dates of Deftones and Stone Temple Pilots are quite near. Last month, Deftones had a concert in Manila. ![]()
